For #NationalHotDogDay we found this 1960s Howard Johnson's Big-Little League Hat Menu, featuring the delicious grilled frankfort. The spiral incisions allowed the menu to bend around the head. The breakfast portion of the menu formed the brim. Who wore one of these unique menus? Maggie L. Walker was a long-time member and leader in the Independent Order of St. Luke, an African American beneficial society. Ms. Walker travelled the country on behalf of the organization giving speeches and launching membership campaigns. Are you attending the Maggie Walker Monument Unveiling tomorrow? The LVA named Maggie Walker a Virginia Women in History honoree in 2000. We're excited to share Broad Street with this amazing leader! #maggielwalker #maggielwalker nationalhistoricsite #rva #virginia #history #womenshistory #blackhistory #statue

This stately Snowy Owl might be an ancestor to Harry Potter's loyal pet, Hedwig. On the twentieth anniversary of the first Harry Potter book, we celebrate not just the books and characters, but the love of reading this series taught many young readers. That's a magic all it's own! Plate 32, "Snow Owl" from American Ornithology by Alexander Wilson, 1808-1825. #harrypotter #harrypotter 20 #owl #imaginarygenealogy #readingismagic
Thank you to our volunteers this weekend! It is so inspiring to connect with history like this. Repost @bbymulatto ・・・ Evocative, startling, beautiful, tear-jerking are a few of the words I could use to describe helping out at @libraryofva transcribe documents from their "Virginia Untold" archive that is slowly being uncovered to tell the neglected and untold narrative of black people in Virginia. So frickin amazing and I cannot wait to dig deeper into these . . . . . . . www.virginiamemory.com/transcribe #vauntold #lvatranscribe #crowdsourcing #virginia #history #thisislva @handsonrva
Today's transcribe-a-thon volunteers are as hard working as always! We are finishing off the Civil War 150 collection and getting started Profiles of Honor: Virginia's Commemoration of the World Wars. The stories in Virginia Untold: The African American Narrative have hooked a few new transcribers today! #lvatranscribe #crowdsourcing #vauntold #history #virginia #thisislva
Here's a sneak peek of an upcoming Google Arts & Culture exhibit for #NationalPollinatorsWeek . This "Common Humble-bee (B. terrestris)" illustration is a hand-colored copperplate engraving from the fantastically titled "Melisselogia, Or, the Female Monarchy: Being an Enquiry Into the Nature, Order, and Government of Bees, Those Admirable, Instructive and Useful Insects..." by John Thorley. London, 1852. Stay tuned for more! #bee #bees #pollinator #summer #savethebees #librariesofinstagram #rarebooks
