Longneck Day was started by Shane O'Brien at the East Geelong Football and Netball Club in 1994. The first Longneck Day was fairly simple, you could only drink longneck bottled beer, there were Chook raffles (one with an actual live chicken), plenty of good cheer and of course, more beer! Over the 23 years that Longneck Day has been an annual tradition at the Eagle’s Nest not much has changed, although there have been some great additions such as hot beef/pork rolls and inviting the netballers along to share a cider or beer longneck with the boys. The record of the most long necks consumed in one day stands at 16 by 1993 premiership Full Forward, Greb Trebilcock, who sadly passed away recently. But his exploits on field, and his efforts on Longneck Day will never be forgotten. Shane O’Brien was a great member of the club who loved a beer and a good yarn. He had a great turn of phrase (cricketers were called googlies, calf exercises were baby cow stretches etc.) and was well loved by all. Sadly, Shane passed away following an asthma attack in October 2001, and in honour of Shane, the annual tradition of Longneck Day turned into a wonderful fundraiser for the Shane O'Brien Memorial Asthma Foundation. A Few years ago, the current footballers took over the running of Longneck Day, using it as a joint fundraiser for their end of season trip, as well as ensuring that the tradition of Longneck Day in memory of its creator, Shane O’Brien is carried on for generations. This year’s Longneck Day is the 23rd iteration of the event. So come down on Sunday the 6th of August and enjoy a beer, a yarn, a beef/pork roll, have a crack at the raffles and enjoy this long standing tradition of the East Geelong Football and Netball Club. Date/time: Sunday 6th of August- Midday onwards Location: East Geelong Football Club Rooms (Eagle’s Nest) Entry: Gold Coin donation (optional) Food: Slow cooked beef/pork rolls for sale Drinks: Carlton, VB and Cider Longnecks Entertainment: Squeaks Big Wheel, raffles, AFL sweeps and more! Please note, that all proceeds of the day are divided between the Shane O’Brien Memorial Asthma Foundation and the football end of season trip. #egfnc

The Weekend Wrap Up: Round 14 vs North Geelong (Netball) A Grade: A tight game contested strongly by both teams right from the first whistle. Megan Cartwright directed the ball well through the midcourt and applied superb pressure in defence. 34-38 B Grade: Our girls applied plenty of pressure lead by Laura Whykes in wing defence. Only a goal separated the teams at the last change. However an injury to goal shooter Emily Catchpole disrupted momentum for our girls who went down by 7. 26-33 C Grade: North Geelong started strong and our girls fought hard all game to minimise the damage. Nadene Hayes and Melanie Taylor pressed hard through the midcourt. 17-39 D Grade: It was a tough day our for our girls with defensive pressure from the opposition clogging space and forcing errors. The Weekend Wrap Up: Round 14 vs North Geelong (Football) The Eagles suffered two tough losses on saturday but showed great heart and character in both the seniors and reserves against a terrific club in North Geelong. The twos boys overcame a goalless first term to be within 10 points of last years premiers at halftime but a big third term from the Pies saw them leading by 5 goals at the final break, and despite a good finish from the Eagles, it wasn’t enough as North took the low scoring clash 8.6.54 to 4.6.30. Captain Haydn Marshall as usual was outstanding, Ben Neville and Josh Buckle were solid down back, Trent Laurie continued his good form in the ruck whilst Matthew Czarnuch once again proved how dangerous he is as a forward, Jarrad Cuthbert played a brilliant first half before succumbing to a knee injury. The seniors got off to a terrific start against North, applying plenty of pressure in the first term and hitting the scoreboard, leading 4.4.28 to 1.2.8 at quarter time. It was a seesaw encounter for the rest of the match, with the Eagles leading at every change before a brave Magpie outfit eventually scraped over the line with a 10.11.71 to 12.9.81 victory. Ash Brown (3 goals) and Ben Harding (2 goals) were a great combo up forward, Jacob Ngarwati’s defense was fantastic as it has been all season, youngsters Harris Monahan and Chris Warwick played great games as did leaders Ruben Vesikuru and Mitch Hoaren. The under 16s were outclassed against top of the ladder, Drysdale suffering a well fought-out 56 point loss. Mitch Patterson, Ayden Pywell and Josh Carey were the better performers in a tough outing at the eagles nest. Meanwhile the under 14s made it 5 on the trot despite inaccurate kicking against an undermanned Barwon Heads. The Eagles (9.13.67) lent Barwon Heads (3.2.20) a player each quarter in their 47 point win with Ben Mulvahil (2 goals), Ethan Barby (3 goals) and Sam Brunt among the best. #eaglesnest #egfnc #eastgeelong #eastgeelong fnc #gdfl #weflyasone #afl #football

The Weekend Wrap Up: Round 13 vs Corio (Netball) A Grade: Carrying a few injuries into the game, our girls started well against a strong Corio line-up. Corio pulled away in the second quarter and pressed on from there despite our girls putting up a strong fight. Tahlia Billows played a tight game on imposing Corio shooter Ruby Horton, contesting every ball. 33-49 B Grade: Our girls managed a four-goal lead at the first change that proved crucial, with little separating the teams for the remainder of the game. Jordyn Phibbs and Emily Catchpole impressed in a game played at high intensity across the court. 34-32 C Grade: A full four quarter effort from the C grade girls, beating Corio across the court for a convincing win. Logan Jozipovic made the goaling circle her own netting 21 goals at 88% whilst Samantha Rundle directed the play well in the midcourt. 33-18 D Grade: Our girls put together their most dominant performance to date to keep them in the hunt for finals. Goals were scored fast with captain Janette Hoskin outstanding under the post aided by Sharon Craig’s precise ball movement. 57-26 Congratulations to Sharon Craig for playing her 250th game! The Weekend Wrap Up: Round 13 vs Corio (Football) The Eagles had a terrific win in the reserves but suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the seniors at the hands of the Corio Devils. The morale of the twos boys was boosted pre-match due to the surprise return of star and cult figure Jake Smith, and he didn’t disappoint, making his presence felt around the ground. After jumping away to a 15 point lead at halftime the boys dominated the third term, lead by the deadly forward combination of Vince Chapman and Matthew Czarnuch who both finished with two goals each. The Eagles kept up the pressure in the final term, eventually having a comfortable 9.15.69 to 3.5.23 win over the Devils. Scott Anderson, Nick Wines, Nick Elliot, Jarrad Cuthbert and Tim Buckingham were the standouts in the great team win. The seniors had a season defining match against the Devils and led for most of the match, led by the likes of skipper Earl Cody down back. The Eagles got as much as 6 goals up in the final term before a brave comeback from the Devils on their home deck saw them steal victory from the jaws of defeat, winning 14.10.94 to 14.9.93. Ash Brown did what he does best bagging a season high 7 goals in a sensational performance. Ben Bolton, Harris Monahan, Josh Bolitho and Jacob Ngarwati also terrific The Eagles now must protect the nest against North Geelong this week. ✊🦅🤙 #eastgeelong #weflyasone #eastgeelong fnc #egfnc #gdfl #football #afl

The Weekend Wrap Up: Round 12 vs Inverleigh (Netball) A Grade: Finishing up on the wrong side of another nail bitter, our girls fought hard all game but failed to capitalise on momentum leading them into a 2 goal loss. Georgia Purcell was outstanding under the post, netting 40 goals, whilst Tahlia Billows created turnovers in defence. 49-51 B Grade: After a tight first quarter our girls struggled to penetrate and maximise opportunities allowing Inverleigh to steadily pull away. Rebecca Willis pushed hard in defence whilst Samantha Rundle provided direction and worked the ball down the court well. 17-42 D Grade: Our girls played from a few goals down for most of the game, pushing hard to bridge the gap.
